Chapter Nine
The whole drive back to our place, I was light-headed and tingly. I’d called Josh just before leaving Tracy’s and somehow convinced him to meet us back at our place. It was time to dispense all the misunderstandings between us and to bare our souls to one another.
It was also time to bare other things. At least I hoped so.
When I drove up the driveway, I saw Josh was already there, leaning against the brick pillared arch of the entryway. Des, who’d just arrived moments before me, strode up the walk, her arms moving stiffly at her side. I jumped out of the car just in time to hear her demand an explanation for his presence.
“I invited him,” I called as I raced up.
Both Des and Josh turned as I approached.
“You invited him? Why?”
“We need to talk. All of us.” With shaking hands I unlocked the front door and went in. I heard the other two follow me to the kitchen, where I grabbed three cold beers from the fridge and passed them around.
“So the two of you are an item now,” Des said, looking down into her bottle.
“What?”
She glanced up and her smile was tight. “When Josh and I broke up today, I told him to come over here. I’m glad he did. You two will be happy together.”
Josh set his beer down and gripped Desi’s arms to turn her toward him. “Is that what you think?”
She shrugged. “It’s okay. Really. I don’t blame you.”
“Wait!” I held up my hands and insinuated myself between the two of them. “Just hold on, you two.” I turned to Des. “Josh loves you, you know.”
“I—”
I held my hand up to stop her, turning to Josh. “Des loves you too, but she’s so afraid of losing you she thinks it’s better to send you away before she gets too hurt.”
“But that’s—”
I held up my hand for silence again. I turned back to Des. “Josh came here today, not to take up with me but to tell me he was leaving. Both of us. Despite his feelings. He feels responsible for the problems between us.”
“But—”
I didn’t need to interrupt her because Des wasn’t able to finish her sentence all on her own. She simply stared at me. Dumbfounded.
“He loves us and he doesn’t want one without the other.”
Des looked wide-eyed between Josh and me. I couldn’t see Josh’s face, but somehow from the way Des’s lips quirked up in a smile, I knew he was nodding behind me.
I took her hand in my right and took his in my left. I backed up so I could see both of them at once. “The truth is…ah, hell…call me greedy, but I want the same thing.”
“You want us both?” Des asked softly.
I nodded. Josh nodded.
“What do you want, Des?” Josh asked, his voice husky and low.
She kept looking between us as if she didn’t quite believe what was happening. Her face split into one of her gorgeous take-me-down-and-tie-me-up smiles and she said, “Fuck me! You two know what I want.
